Event Calendar

Below is a list of up-coming  and some past meetings and events sponsored by the Essex County Beekeepers Society (ECBS), Inc.  Included is a link to the state-wide NJ Beekeepers Association calendar.  The list will occasionally show other events of significant interest to the members. Usually, and unless specified otherwise, the Essex County Beekeepers Society meets at Garibaldi Hall, Essex County Environmental Center (ECEC), 621-B Eagle Rock Ave., Roseland, N.J. 07068 - Phone: 973.228.8776, FAX: 973-228-3793. The main building parking lot may still have a sign that says "beekeepers" - BUT IT'S NOT the building you want.  Meetings are held at Garibaldi Hall which is set back, TO THE RIGHT when facing the main building, and partially hidden by trees.  CLICK THE BUTTON ABOVE or HERE FOR DRIVING DIRECTIONS & A MAP.  When the map is displayed, select "Get Directions"  in the upper left corner, or possibly there will be a "To Here" on the map. Type in your starting location and you will be presented with turn-by-turn instructions.

  • New Jersey (state-wide) Beekeepers Association Calendar.

  • 2nd Tuesday of each month, 7-9 PM - MONTHLY ECBS MEETING.   Usually at ECEC,  Essex County Environmental Center.   See DIRECTIONS, above.   Besides regular business, meetings will often have a theme/topic and speaker.  See schedule below for details.  Pease do not assume that meetings will take place without fail.  To be sure, check this calendar page - and when in doubt, contact one of the Society's officers listed on the Membership page.
     
  • Tuesday, Jan 20, 2009, ECBS Executive Board 2009 Kickoff Meeting, 7:00-9:00 P.M., Essex County Environmental Center. Click here for meeting minutes (PDF format).

  • Tuesday, Feb. 10-11, 2009, NJBA Annual Honey Show & Competition. The results are in and ECBS Members Excelled !!! Click here to see 2009 contest results and click here to see some pictures.

  • Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, NJBA Winter Meeting, New Jersey Museum of Agriculture, North Brunswick, NJ. (...and its Valentine's Day!). For details see NJ Beekeepers Association calendar web page.

  • February 21 & 28, 2009 (2 Saturdays) - SHORT COURSE iN BEEKEEPING.  ECEC. Offered by the Essex County Beekeepers Society. This course is for new beekeepers, or those needing a refresher. The course will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, February 21 and 28, 2009, with a Field Day in April, 2009. The course covers a full year of beekeeping, including purchasing and assembling equipment, harvesting, extracting, and bottling honey. Basics of disease and mite control also covered. The course fee of $70 per person includes NJBA membership for 2009, a continental breakfast and an afternoon snack.

  • March 10, 2009 - Splits & Nucs - ECEC.  Speaker George Schaeffer of Jeans Honey Farm, Flemington, NJ . Coordinator: Joe Lelinho.

  • March 11, 2009, Wednesday - Beeswax Decorating of Ukranian EggsUkranina eggs
    For general public & ECBS members.  Speaker: Pat Kotlar, ECBS Member.  ECEC, Essex County Environmental Center, 7 – 9 PM. Discover the world of beeswax art and learn how to make Ukrainian Eggs. Using wax, dye, and a special tool called a “kistka”, you will create a unique springtime decoration of your own to take home. $17 per person workshop fee includes all materials; Free for Essex County Beekeepers Society members.

  • April TBD, 2009 - Field Day for February "Short Course in Beekeeping" Graduates. Location TBD.  Coordinator: Landi Simone.

  • April 14, 2009 - Natural Approaches to Beekeeping  ECEC. We have a rare opportunity to enjoy the teaching of a giant in the beekeeping community, Ross Conrad of Dancing Bee Gardens, Middlebury, VT.  Ross Conrad began learning his craft from from Charles Mraz and is the author of "Natural Beekeeping- Organic approaches to modern Apiculture."  Coordinator: Liz Nelson.

    April 18, 2009, 11:00am to 4:00PM - Fourth Annual Earth Day celebration - Join the Essex County Environmental Center and its partner agencies for a fun-filled day to celebrate Planet Earth! Enjoy our Green Vendor tent, canoeing, hiking, beekeeping demonstrations, refreshments, and much more! Cost: FREE!

  • June 9, 2009 - Verroa Mite Treatments - ECEC. Forms of treatment for Varroa Mites and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Speaker: our own expert and Master Beekeeper: Landi Simone.

  • Monday, July 27 - Informal meeting at the main building in the Environmental Center. It's movie night! We will show the movie, “A Bee Movie”, created by NJ Dept. of Agriculture and redone on DVD by our own member Eric Hanan, a first year beekeeper. We will also have a time for discussion when you can bring up any mid-season questions you may have or just share your experience’s thus-far. Hope you can make it, if not, we understand -- Hey it’s summer!

    A time for fellowship, hive inspections
    and of course enjoying some food. 
    Attendees are asked to bring a salad, drink or other dish to share with the group.  Grilled hamburgers & hot dogs will be supplied by the ECBS board.

  • October 3, 2009 (Saturday) 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. - Octoberfest - Come celebrate autumn! There will be fun-filled activities for the entire family: games, canoeing, activities, crafts, and food.   • October 13, 2009 - Making Mead - ECEC. Speaker will be Jay DeSimone, winner of the "Sweet", "With Fruit Juice" and "Division Best" Mead entries at the NJBA 2009 Annual Honey Show & Competition and a few weeks later 1st place in a American Homebrewers Association competition. Quite a feat: 3 entries and 3 first places! We are lucky to have Jay join us. Coordinator: Pier Guidi.

  • November 10, 2009 - Making Crèmes & Lip Balms - ECEC. Speaker & Coordinator: Landi Simone, winner of the "Lip Balm", "Soap", "Hand Cream/Lotion" and "Division Best" entries at the NJBA 2009 Annual Honey Show & Competition.

    Christmas & Holiday Party
